Air

Access to clean air is a crucial piece to keeping us healthy. Because air is invisible, odorless and silent, many of us take the act of breathing for granted. Yet, some of the highest rates of air pollution in the country occur right here in Michigan. Air contaminants threaten people, wildlife and our Great Lakes; corrode buildings, bridges, and painted surfaces; damage forests and crops; threaten wildlife; produce unpleasant odors; and reduce visibility. People most at risk are those living close to industrial polluters, and are often low income and minority populations. In these populations, we are seeing an increase in asthma and other respiratory illnesses due to poor air quality.

The issues presented in this section expose the silent yet visible consequences of air pollution. The solutions proposed enable industries to take a lead in reducing air pollution, and consequently protect the health of all Michigan citizens.
